I don't meet a lot of other "Alanna"'s but when I do, they're usually spelled and/or pronounced differently, and they're all WRONG, obviously. If we both share the same spelling and pronunciation, then I'm very happy. But I like my name that was quite unique as I was growing up, even though you hear it a lot more now. (My name is pronounced like it kind of rhymes with iguana. Not banana. Just for the record.)
I had a fun chat with Natalie when I named my baby Camille. I suddenly worried that it's a French name that I was saying all American. In French, you wouldn't hear the ending at all and it would sound like "Camee." Natalie (bless her heart) assured me that since we're in America we are FINE pronouncing it the American way. How hilarious and pretentious would it be if I insisted on everyone calling her Camee though???
And yes, my mind immediately went to Dawn Shaeffer of the Babysitter's Club.
Once, on my mission, my Japanese companion said something about Ruchifero. I had no idea what that was and when I asked her, she got irritated saying, "It's an English word, you should know this!" It took me looking up the scripture verse in English to figure out that this was the Japanese-ified version of Lucifer. It was so funny to me, and not something I would have ever figured out on my own...
